Dole Forum

The Dole Forum is a major part of the Institute’s educational programming efforts to reach the students at the University of Kansas and the surrounding community. It consists of ongoing programs covering a wide variety of topics designed to encourage political participation among young people through education and civil discussion.

Among the national personalities the Dole Forum has hosted are Republican strategist Matthew Dowd, ABC’s Kate Snow, former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, Democratic Strategist Donna Brazile, West Wing producer Alex Graves, Iraq commander and former Commander of Ft. Leavenworth Gen. David Petraeus, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and 2008 presidential hopeful Senator Joseph Biden among others.

Featuring just-returned members of the 10th Mountain Division, who were involved in training the Afghan military and police. Members of this unit were the first in the US Army to deploy to Afghanistan in support of President Obama’s decision to surge forces. This unit was also the first US Army unit specifically directed to support the NATO Training Mission of training and fielding the Afghan National Security Force.

David Palkki is the Deputy Director of the National Defense University's Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC). Before joining the CRRC, he spent several years analyzing Saddam's Iraq at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). There, he authored several studies on Saddam's Iraq, including a major study for the Department of Defense based on captured audio files. Palkki was the second annual Dole Archive Visiting Fellow. A public reception followed the program.

Jimmy Johnson, area author, archaeologist, and educator will tell the compelling story of his great-grandfather’s escape from slavery on a Missouri plantation to Quindaro, Kansas in 1862, his enlistment in the 1st Kansas Colored volunteer Infantry Regiment and his eventual settlement as a farmer in Douglas County, Kansas. Johnson, a KU alumnus of Anthropology, will reveal the archaeological, historical and genealogical methods he used to trace his ancestor’s life.
