This Pizza & Politics will give you a close-up look at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Stacy Elmer is a KU graduate who earned her MA in philosophy before accepting a job as the special assistant to the assistant secretary of bioterrorism preparedness and emergency response in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In this capacity, Stacy responds to emergencies like the H1N1 outbreak and the natural disaster relief efforts. Most recently, Stacy returned from a mission to Haiti where she worked on the Disaster Mortuary team with the objective of identifying and returning the remains of U.S. citizens who died
in the Haiti earthquake.

Pizza and Politics is an informal discussion forum for KU students. Political professionals are invited to share with students their insights on many aspects of politics and public service. These lunch gatherings start around noon and are held most frequently at the KU Adams Alumni Center across from the Kansas Union. And, just for students, complimentary pizza and beverages are always available.

Pizza and Politics events are directed and coordinated by the Dole Institute Student Advisory Board with support from the Dole Institute.

Who Cares What You Think? Pollsters Do
GUEST: Patrick Tuohey

This Pizza & Politics focused on campaigns, politics, and the 2010 midterm elections. By trade, Patrick Tuohey is a public opinion researcher. He founded Market and Communications Research, Inc. (MarCom) in 1999 and has conducted research studies for organizations such as Monsanto, Anheuser Busch, Merck, Bristol-Myers Squibb and the National Sheriffs' Association. In addition to his professional role, Patrick serves as chairman of the Missouri Rights Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and defending the rights of Missourians against government power, and as chairman of Missourians for Responsible Government, a 501(c)4 group supporting the goals of smaller, less-intrusive and more transparent government. He is editor of The Missouri Record, a journal of state politics and policy. Prior to launching MarCom, Patrick was the director of communications for Luntz Research in Washington, DC and a legislative aide to Representative John L. Mica (R-FL).

This Pizza & Politics focused on personal profiles and finding that job in politics. Beka Romm currently serves as Deputy Director of the Kansas office of American Majority, a national nonpartisan, nonprofit political training institute equipping candidates, activists and college students to advocate for liberty. Beka joined American Majority as a Field Representative in May 2008. Prior to joining American Majority, she worked at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence.
Julie Merz currently serves as Deputy Director of Member Services for Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) in his role as Assistant to the Speaker of the House, where her days are spent assisting freshman and sophomore Members of the Democratic Caucus. She worked for Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.) in various capacities, including serving as Moore's District Director and Campaign Manager from 2002-2007.

Discussion focused on how differing political opinions don't rule out friendship, even across party lines. Dole Fellow Wilma Goldstein led the discussion with former Republican Congressional campaign director Steve Stockmeyer and former Democratic Congressional campaign director Bill Sweeney.

David Schimke is been the editor in chief and general manager of Utne Reader, an alternative media digest that sparks forward-thinking conversations about politics, pop culture, and the environment. His political reporting, cultural analysis, arts criticism, and feature writing was honored on three occasions by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and he has appeared as a guest on Nightline and National Public. David continues to report and write about the state of the media both independent and mainstream electoral politics, faith-based movements, and citizen activism.

Join Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for free pizza and political chatter. First elected U.S. Representative from Georgia in 1978, Gingrich became a natural leader in the House. He led the Republican Party to regain control of Congress in 1994 and became the first Republican speaker in nearly 50 years. Gingrich served as Speaker of the House from 1995 to 1999. KU students only please.

organization dedicated to promoting the positive advancement of the US
Hispanic community. Formerly, Octavio served as a Security Analyst for
US embassies and consulates in Europe, Africa, and South America. In
2004, he was selected by the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. and
the US-Spain Council as one of the Young Hispanic Leaders representing
the United States at a business, cultural and political leadership
program in Madrid and Santander, Spain.
