Biographer Thompson, author of Bob Dole: the Republicans’ Man For All Seasons, provided an inside look at Dole’s lifetime of public service. Thompson first came to know then-Senator Dole as Washington correspondent for the Kansas City Star. Currently, Thompson is Communications Director for Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.).

Three former Dole staffers Sheila Burke (Chief of Staff 1986-1996), Rod DeArment (Senior Advisor 1979-1986), and Michael Glassner (Senior Advisor 1985-2000) assessed Dole's leadership style and major accomplishments, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Social Security reform, and Women and Infant Children nutrition program.

WILLIE BROWN

Brown, one of America's most prominent black politicians, headlined an evening discussion on public service leadership and the future of our nation. Brown was in the California State Assembly for 30 years, serving as its Speaker for an unprecedented 15 years. He was Mayor of San Francisco from 1996 to 2004.

Baker, who served as the U.S. Senate Historian from 1975-2009, is the Inaugural Dole Archive Visiting Fellow. In an interview-style program with Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy, Baker discussed some of the U.S. Senate’s hallmark personalities, achievements and limitations. He provided historical perspective on the chamber’s role in the success of the U.S. political system.
