Escaping Slavery in "Little Dixie"
JIMMY JOHNSON


Jimmy Johnson, area author, archaeologist, and educator will tell the compelling story of his great-grandfather’s escape from slavery on a Missouri plantation to Quindaro, Kansas in 1862, his enlistment in the 1st Kansas Colored volunteer Infantry Regiment and his eventual settlement as a farmer in Douglas County, Kansas. Johnson, a KU alumnus of Anthropology, will reveal the archaeological, historical and genealogical methods he used to trace his ancestor’s life.

On April 12, 2011, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar hosted a plaque dedication ceremony to honor Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole at the World War II Memorial on The Mall in Washington, D.C. The event, emceed by Tom Brokaw, honored Senator Dole for his lifelong support of American Veterans and his instrumental role in establishing the Memorial. Speakers at the ceremony included Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Former Senator Elizabeth Dole, Senator Pat Roberts, Bob Dole and others.

David Palkki is the Deputy Director of the National Defense University's Conflict Records Research Center (CRRC). Before joining the CRRC, he spent several years analyzing Saddam's Iraq at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). There, he authored several studies on Saddam's Iraq, including a major study for the Department of Defense based on captured audio files. Palkki was the second annual Dole Archive Visiting Fellow.

Dole Fellow Joseph C. Phillips was joined by Ken Blackwell and Robert Traynham. Blackwell, former Mayor of Cincinnati was the first African-American to be the candidate for governor of a major party in Ohio. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Republican National Committee's Platform Committee and was a candidate for chairman of the RNC. Robert Traynham has been a part of the Washington political scene for over fifteen years and was consistently ranked as one of the most powerful staffers on Capitol Hill during his tenure in government. He has worked extensively for the Congressional leadership as a top Communications professional, and has significant experience with both presidential and senatorial political campaigns. Both give their views on modern issues black conservatives face today.
